Browns' Pettine confirms Josh McCown favored to win starting quarterback job

The Cleveland Browns haven't named their starter at quarterback, but Josh McCown is one step closer to claiming the role as his own.

In a radio interview with Cleveland's 92.3 The Fan, Mike Pettine was asked if McCown is the favorite to win the job entering training camp. The Browns head coach replied "I think it's fair to say that," via Mary Kay Cabot of the Northeast Ohio Media Group.

Pettine promised an open competition at quarterback for the Browns, with McCown and sophomore Johnny Manziel slated as the prime contenders. Thad Lewis and Connor Shaw are also vying for the role. 

McCown struggled throughout the 2014 campaign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, throwing 11 touchdowns against 14 interceptions in 11 games. Tampa Bay sputtered to a league-worst 2-14 record in large part due to McCown's ineptitude.
