The Oakland Raiders will release veteran wide receiver James Jones, according to a report from CSN Bay Area's Scott Bair.

According to Bair, Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie informed Jones of the decision with a phone call Sunday night.

After spending his first seven seasons in the league with the Green Bay Packers, Jones signed a three-year, $11.3-million contract with Oakland as a free agent during the 2014 offseason. Jones recorded team highs in receptions (73) and receiving touchdowns (6), and was second on the Raiders with 666 receiving yards last year.

Jones became expendable after Oakland signed former San Francisco 49ers wideout Michael Crabtree as a free agent and then added Alabama star Amari Cooper with the fourth overall pick in the draft. Rod Streater is also expected to be at full health next season, leaving Jones buried on the depth chart.

The decision to release Jones will save the Raiders $3.433 million on the salary cap for the upcoming season.

Over the course of eight seasons, Jones has registered 383 receptions for 4,971 yards and 43 touchdowns in 120 career games.
