Flyers name Dave Hakstol head coach

The Philadelphia Flyers have gone a bit off the board in their choice of a new head coach.
Dave Hakstol, who spent the past 11 seasons at the University of North Dakota, has been named to the position, general manager Ron Hextall announced Monday.
"Dave brings a wealth of head coaching experience and success to the Philadelphia Flyers organization," said Hextall in a statement. "He's a proven winner and we are pleased to have him become part of the Flyers family."
Hakstol, who took over as UND head coach in 2004, compiled a record of 289-143-43 there, guiding the club to his seventh berth in the NCAA Frozen Four this past season.
"I am extremely excited to be named the Philadelphia Flyers new head coach," said Hakstol. "Through the process here with Ron (Hextall) and everybody in the Flyers organization I have gained even more of an understanding of the history and tradition of this organization and I'm very proud to become part of the Philadelphia Flyers today."
The UND program produced 20 NHL players during Hakstol's tenure, including Jonathan Toews, T.J. Oshie, Travis Zajac, Drew Stafford and Matt Greene.
Hakstol becomes the 19th head coach in Flyers history.
