Penguins' Malkin dealt with sprained ankle, Hornqvist had broken rib

Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford revealed the nature of injuries to Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist on Tuesday.

“Geno is the type of guy that is not going to use excuses," Rutherford said. "He had a sprained ankle. He came back sooner than most players would."

Patric Hornqvist's injury was a broken rib, Rutherford added.

Malkin went 15 games without a goal but played down the stretch and throughout the Penguins' first-round series against the New York Rangers.

He will join Russia at the upcoming World Championship in Prague.

Hornqvist missed nearly two weeks in March and was limited to 64 regular-season games but played in all five playoff contests.

The Rangers eliminated the Penguins with a 2-1 overtime win in Game 5.
