John Elway calls out Demaryius Thomas for skipping workouts: 'It makes no sense'

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway isn't happy that franchise-tagged wideout Demaryius Thomas is staying away from offseason workouts as he seeks a long-term contract.

"Him being away from here there is zero value not only to us, but to him," Elway told reporters Thursday. "To me it makes no sense."

Elway pointed out that Thomas is financially covered if he gets hurt working out with the Broncos, but not if he gets hurt working out away from the team.

Elway neglected to point out what a major injury, regardless of where it occurs, could mean for Thomas's long-term earning potential.

It's commonplace for franchise-tagged players not to show up for work as a negotiating ploy. Thomas is guaranteed $12.82 million if he signs his franchise tag tender, but he is exercising his leverage and seeking far more money on a long-term deal.

Elway said Thomas's absence will have "zero effect" on contract talks.

Thomas has said he plans to show up for training camp July 15.
