Student-coach: Rutgers head coach Eddie Jordan to complete degree in May

We've all heard of the rigors that come with being a student-athlete in the NCAA.

But what about a student-coach?

That's exactly what Rutgers bench boss Eddie Jordan has been doing this year, as the 60-year-old is expected to earn his undergraduate degree on May 17, according to Jerry Carino of the Asbury Park Press.

"Every day it was practice, film, schoolwork, papers, readings," Jordan said. "My laptop went to bed with me. It was a lot of late nights, early mornings. It has been challenging. It has been rewarding."

Jordan attended Rutgers from 1973-77, earning 109 credits as a full-time student, before playing eight years in the NBA.

That left him 11 credits shy of the graduation requirement.

When he was introduced as the new head coach in 2013, his academic standing came into question. His initial major, physical education, is no longer offered at Rutgers.

Instead, Jordan will earn a bachelor of science in labor studies and employment relations. It's that kind of attitude and drive that pushes his players in the classroom and on the court.

"He earned a lot of respect from all of us," said senior guard Stephen Zurich, who is graduating next month with a degree in economics. "We'd be on road trips and we'd have study hall and he would be there too, on his laptop. If we had it at six he would already be there when we walked in.

"That's walking the walk."
