Report: Lakers to sign Vander Blue for final 2 games

Eric Hartline / USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers used to employ the biggest names in basketball. These days, the best they can do is sign the guys with the most fun ones to say.

Nick Young famously couldn't get enough of Tarik Black's name, but he's got an even bigger treat in store. According to Mark Medina of the L.A. Daily News, the Lakers plan to sign shooting guard Vander Blue from their D-League affiliate, the Los Angeles D-Fenders, for the final two games of the regular season.

The signing is mostly born of necessity, as the Lakers have suffered an almost comical barrage of injuries to their guard rotation this season. They've lost Young, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Ronnie Price, Xavier Henry, Wayne Ellington, Jeremy Lin, and, most recently, Dwight Buycks.

Blue, who went undrafted out of Marquette in 2013, played three games with the Boston Celtics last year, and signed a camp deal with the Philadelphia 76ers before this season. After failing to crack their roster, he's torn it up for the D-Fenders. He ranks fifth in the D-League in scoring at 23.3 points per game, chipping in 5.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.9 steals while shooting 41.6 percent from 3-point range.

Officially locked into the NBA's fourth-worst record, the Lakers are practically guaranteed to hold onto the top-five-protected draft pick they owe the Phoenix Suns.
