Timberwolves' Rubio undergoes surgery on left ankle

Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports

Let's hope this does the trick for Ricky Rubio and his wonky ankles.

The Minnesota Timberwolves point guard underwent arthroscopic surgery on his injured left ankle Monday, the team announced.

"Surgery went well. Thanks for all the well wishes. Time for recovery and get healthy," Rubio said on Twitter

"You gotta take advantage of any situation and look for the bright side. Another challenge. And I have no doubt I will come back stronger than ever."

The team originally announced the surgery Saturday. From that release:

We have closely monitored the status of Ricky's ankle injury during the rehabilitation process. Ricky recently experienced ongoing soreness in his left ankle and it became apparent that it was not responding according to its anticipated timeline for recovery.

...

Ricky was most recently seen by Dr. Richard Ferkel of the Southern California Orthopedic Institute in Los Angeles and it was concluded that the best option would be to pursue diagnostic arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle.

As a result of the surgery, Rubio is unlikely to appear in the European championships for Spain this summer, reports Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports.

Injuries have limited Rubio to just 22 games played this season. The fourth-year guard has been solid when he has played, averaging 10.3 points, 8.8 assists and 1.7 steals in 31.5 minutes per game.

Rubio signed a four-year extension last summer that starts next season. He will earn $55 million through 2019.
