Norris gets 1st career win, helps Blue Jays down Yankees

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

The man in the van helped the Toronto Blue Jays clinch an opening series win over the New York Yankees - and picked up his first career victory in the process.

Left-hander Daniel Norris threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five in Thursday's 6-3 win.

Making his second career start, Norris came out gunning, striking out a pair in the first inning en route to retiring the side in order. Toronto's No. 1 prospect - according to Baseball America - experienced few hiccups until New York's bats came to life in the sixth inning.

Alex Rodriguez turned on a 1-0 pitch, smacking it to left field for his first home run since Sept. 20, 2013. Rodriguez's blast was the 655th homer of his career, moving him five away from tying Hall of Famer Willie Mays for fourth place all time.

Mark Teixeira followed with a solo shot of his own two batters later to cut Toronto's lead to 5-3, but the Yankees were unable to get any closer.

Toronto turned to three relievers to close out the game, including 20-year-old rookie Miguel Castro, who retired the side in order for his first career save.

New York lefty CC Sabathia, coming off season-ending knee surgery, made his first start since last May. He allowed five runs (four earned) and struck out eight over 5 2/3 innings.
