James says he'd vote himself for MVP, even though he can't

Wednesday's leak of a National Basketball Players' Association memo that announces a new Players Choice Award naturally had tongues wagging across the league.

And as someone who has won four NBA MVP awards – voted on by the media – LeBron James was diplomatic about the current system. "(Changing the voting system is) a conversation we can have at a later date," James said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

"The media has done a great job every single year picking the awards. But us players get to see the guys every single day, so it's a longer conversation."

There's been a healthy amount of criticism about the current system, that sees select media members vote on the award, leaving players out of the mix. Stephen Curry, for one, has said that players should get a portion of the vote and Kevin Durant, in his attack on the media in general during the All-Star Break, suggested that the media isn't in the film room and goes for sexy names.

The new award in the NBPA will allow union members to vote for their counterparts, but not themselves. That wouldn't stop James from giving himself the vote this season.

"Myself," James said when asked who would get his MVP vote this year.

Points for honesty. He's also still got a case, as does Curry, James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis.
