Report: Browns' Johnny Manziel could leave rehab as early as next week

Johnny Manziel may be rejoining the Cleveland Browns very soon.

Manziel is set to be discharged from rehab in the near future and possibly as early as next week, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer

The quarterback reportedly played a round of golf with his father on Saturday, according to Roy Lang III of USA Today, but that doesn't mean he has left the rehab facility for good. As Cabot notes, Manziel is permitted some time away to spend with family.

Browns general manager Ray Farmer noted last month that he expected Manziel to be present for team workouts in late April, but his role with the team remains in question for 2015.

Manziel struggled mightily as a rookie and Cleveland brought in veteran Josh McCown this offseason. At this point McCown would figure to have the edge in earning the starting job given his experience, unless Manziel can somehow make enormous strides throughout the summer and in training camp.

That could be challenging for Manziel. The Browns have a new offensive coordinator in John DeFilippo, meaning he will have to learn a new offense while staying on track with his post-rehab responsibilities.

Cleveland could also opt to draft a quarterback to push both McCown and Manziel for playing time.
