Lions' Jim Caldwell on Reggie Bush: 'It didn't work out'

Reggie Bush enjoyed a productive first season with the Detroit Lions, but after managing just 297 rushing yards in 2014, he was sent packing.

Decreased production and an unwillingness to take a pay cut are believed to have played a role in the Lions' decision to release Bush in February, which head coach Jim Caldwell hinted at when asked about the subject at the NFL's annual meeting.

"I think oftentimes you'll find that there are going to be some adjustments here and there that you make that when you look at your team and make a determination on your personnel, what you think is best," Caldwell said, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

"Sometimes you got to let some guys go, and sometimes you try to make certain you keep certain guys if you can. But it's not always the case, and in that particular case it didn't work out. So we look to do other things."

The Lions saved approximately $1.7 million in cap space by releasing Bush, who ended up signing a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers. His new team his excited to have him.

"He's not a gadget guy, in my opinion," 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula said, according to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. "Reggie Bush is a running back, and I'm really excited about Reggie joining the crew."
