Yankees' Rodriguez to make first base debut Sunday

After two decades on the left side of the infield, Alex Rodriguez will finally find out how the other half lives.

Rodriguez, a two-time Gold Glove award winner at shortstop who transitioned permanently to third base in 2004, will make his first career start at first base Sunday when the New York Yankees head to Kissimmee, Fla., to take on the Houston Astros.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi expressed this offseason his desire to try Rodriguez out at first base in order to add some depth behind Mark Teixeira and Garrett Jones, but didn't appear so enamored with the idea when broached about it earlier this month.

Girardi, however, appears to have come around, as Rodriguez will play five innings at first base Sunday at Osceola County Stadium.

New York's manager mentioned earlier this week that Rodriguez has played his way into consideration for everyday at-bats at DH. Rodriguez, a 14-time All-Star, is hitting .290/.389/.516 with two home runs and five walks through 13 Grapefruit League games after sitting out the entire 2014 campaign with a season-long suspension.
