Cubs' Maddon: I don't know who promised Baez a spot on Opening Day roster

Despite his struggles at the plate this spring, Javier Baez insisted Tuesday that he was assured he'd make the Opening Day roster for the Chicago Cubs.

Manager Joe Maddon, however, isn't too sure where the 22-year-old got his information from.

"It was not told by me," Maddon remarked to Patrick Mooney of CSNChicago. "It wasn't told by (president of baseball operations) Theo (Epstein). It wasn't told by (general manager) Jed (Hoyer). I have no idea where that came from."

According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, a club official also confirmed Tuesday that Baez was told he'd make club as the second baseman. Publicly, however, the Cubs maintain that no final roster decisions have been made.

Baez, the ninth overall pick in the 2011 draft, stumbled through a disappointing rookie season with the Cubs last summer, hitting just .169/.227/.324 with a gargantuan 41.5 percent strikeout rate over 52 games.

Often chided for his hyper-aggressive approach, Baez entered spring training resolved to make some adjustments at the plate, but has thus far struggled in the Cactus League. Heading into Wednesday's contest against the Seattle Mariners, Baez is hitting .128/.190/.205 with only one home run and 14 strikeouts in 39 at-bats this spring.
