The NFL has long been considering the idea of altering the extra point rules, and an official change to the process now appears to be relatively near.

Meeting with the media at the conclusion of the owners meetings Wednesday, Competition Committee Co-Chair Rich McKay explained that a vote could be held on the matter later this spring.

As transcribed by Pro Football Talk:

We did not vote on the extra point. We did have about a 30- to 40-minute discussion on the extra point, a very interesting and lively discussion with a lot of ideas. Clearly, positive, in support of making a change. I think in the next 30 days you will see the Competition Committee, in conjunction with a lot of coaches, develop a lot of alternatives and be ready to put something forward for potentially a vote in May.

The committee has tabled discussions for a number of possible adjustments, including moving the extra point back, narrowing the goal posts, and even allowing the defense the opportunity to score if they were to force a turnover and take it back for a touchdown.

Either way, some significant change appears to be on the horizon, with an official vote on the matter potentially coming at the next set of league meetings in May.
