Mets' Murphy could open season on DL with hamstring injury

The New York Mets are set to open the 2015 campaign with injury concerns in the middle infield.

While X-rays returned negative on shortstop Wilmer Flores left foot and he's expected to be ready for Opening Day, the team is preparing to have second baseman Daniel Murphy open the season on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

"He'll be out a week or so, maybe a little longer," general manager Sandy Alderson told Adam Rubin of ESPN. "Hamstrings take longer than people want to admit."

It's been an injury riddled spring for both the Mets and Murphy. Reliever Josh Edgin and starter Zack Wheeler are both set to undergo Tommy John surgery, while Murphy missed a couple of games with a bruised right hand before departing Friday's game with hamstring tightness.

Should Murphy not be ready to start the season, Alderson said that either Matt Reynolds or Daniel Muno, who are both enjoying solid springs, will be considered for the job.

Player AB HR AVG/OBP/SLG
Muno 31 0 .387/.424/.419
Reynolds 29 1 .379/.400/.483
