Bills' Rex Ryan: 'We feel great about where our offense is'

Rex Ryan will stick to the ground-and-pound offensive philosophy in his first season as head coach of the Buffalo Bills, but some added talent elsewhere on the field has the potential to make the kind of complete unit neither he nor the organization have enjoyed in seasons past.

Talking about his new-look offense in an appearance on WGR-550 AM on Friday, Ryan explained that while the Bills will certainly look to control the game with their rushing attack, they also have several playmakers on the outside that opposing defenses will be forced to account for.

"We prefer to ground and pound it, we're going to run it 50 times if we can on you," Ryan said, according to Sal Maiorana of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

"We're not naive enough to think we're going to be able to get away with that. We can spread you out and create some nightmares in coverage. If you want to stop our run by keeping all the big guys in there, then so be it, we'll be able to hurt you in a lot of different ways outside."

While he's widely considered one of the NFL's premier defensive minds, a lack of production on the offensive side of the ball kept Ryan's teams from enjoying consistent success throughout the majority of his six-year stint with the New York Jets.

LeSean McCoy - acquired in a surprise trade with the Philadelphia Eagles - is still arguably one of the league's most talented running backs, and he figures to get the bulk of the workload in Buffalo's backfield.

As Ryan explained, however, tight end Charles Clay and wide receiver Percy Harvin joining Sammy Watkins will force opposing defenses to respect and plan for the passing game as well.

Though the quarterback position remains a fairly significant concern, Ryan and his staff are confident in where the unit is headed, whether it's Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel or Tyrod Taylor that wins the starting job.

"We've got guys to work with, and there will be competition. We feel great about where our offense is," he said.

With a dominant defense already in place, and Ryan ideally helping the group improve even more, the Bills will hope their offensive additions allow them to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
