Philip Rivers hesitant to sign extension if Chargers move to Los Angeles

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

If the San Diego Chargers move to Los Angeles, they may be doing so without their franchise quarterback.

Philip Rivers told Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego that he isn't sure if Los Angeles is the best place for his family.

"What we’ve established here with my growing family is hard to recreate," he said. "It’s hard to up and recreate that. I know that moves are part of life. But that certainly is fair to say that (not being sold on moving to Los Angeles) is part of it. The good thing is I’m not under contract in a year where we’d potentially be in Los Angeles."

Rivers is entering the final year of his contract and told Acee he is unlikely to sign a new deal until the fate of the Chargers is settled.

"What I can control and all I know as of today, I am signed up for one more year," he said. "I guess things could change, but with all the uncertainty in many aspects, I don’t see it changing before camp gets here, and when camp gets here I’m even more certain to play it out."

If the Chargers don't iron out plans for a new stadium by the end of the year, the team will almost certainly be heading to Los Angeles.

Acee notes there has been speculation around the league that the Chargers could go after Marcus Mariota in the draft as a contingency plan.

General manager Tom Telesco attempted to dispel any rumors that Rivers wouldn't be behind center for the foreseeable future.

"I don’t like Philip as our QB, I love him," Telesco wrote. "And I’ll go to war with him."

The 33-year-old hasn't missed a game since 2005 and has been the face of the franchise for more than a decade. Seeing him in a different uniform would certainly come as a shock to Chargers fans.
