Cubs' Bryant open to playing outfield: 'I'm looking forward to another challenge'

Chicago Cubs top prospect Kris Bryant is taking a few days off defensively to rest a sore shoulder, but when he returns to the field, he'll get a look at a new position.

Having played exclusively at third base in two seasons in the minor leagues, the Cubs plan to work Bryant out in the outfield this spring.

"I'm excited," Bryant told reporters. "I'm a baseball player, so as long as I'm on the field playing, catching the ball, running down some fly balls, it will be fun. I played some outfield before in college, and it was fun. I'm looking forward to another challenge."

Bryant is having an exceptionally hot spring with six home runs in 20 at-bats, but was held out of the lineup Sunday as the Cubs are taking a cautious approach with his fatigued right throwing shoulder. He is, however, scheduled to DH on Monday.

"That'll be good for me to get up there and get some at-bats," Bryant said. "I can always use those at-bats getting into the season and off big-league pitching."
