The Oakland Raiders may have found Derek Carr's backup.
Oakland has signed quarterback Christian Ponder to a contract. The deal is for one year, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.
Ponder has familiarity with Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, having played under him with the Minnesota Vikings.
The signing could spell the end for Raiders backup Matt Schaub, who the team signed to a lucrative contract last offseason. It was a dreadful mistake and the Raiders could save $5.5 million against the cap by letting him go.
Ponder will likely compete with Matt McGloin for the backup job behind Carr.
The former first-round pick lost his starting job with Minnesota due to inconsistent play, but he has enough experience to be a suitable No. 2 option.
