Diamondbacks' Hernandez out 6-8 weeks with fractured left hand
The Arizona Diamondbacks' already thin depth behind the plate took another hit as catcher Oscar Hernandez is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks with a hand injury.
Hernandez, who the Diamondbacks acquired in the Rule 5 draft, said he felt pain in his hand Monday and knew something was wrong the following day when he felt sharp pain during his at-bat. Tests revealed he suffered a fracture to the hamate bone of his left hand.
While the projected timetable is expected to keep him out of the lineup for Opening Day, Hernandez is thankful that it isn't longer.
"It's a quick rehab," Hernandez told Nick Piecoro of azcentral. "It's not like three or four months. It's only six weeks. It's not a big deal."
Tuffy Gosewisch is the only other catcher on the 40-man roster, though the Diamondbacks have veteran Gerald Laird and prospect Peter O'Brien as potential candidates to fill in.
