Report: 49ers, Aldon Smith agree on restructured contract

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

If Aldon Smith gets into any more off-field issues, it could cost him a lot of money.

The San Francisco 49ers' linebacker agreed to restructure his deal on Thursday, but not in the conventional way. Smith will still make $9.75 million in 2015, it's just not fully guaranteed.

Smith will be paid in monthly roster bonuses come April and weekly bonuses once the season starts, according to Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee.

This will protect the 49ers against Smith if he has any more discipline issues.

Smith's agent, Doug Hendrickson, said Smith is hoping to earn a long-term deal by proving himself.

"Aldon appreciates and is loyal to what they've done for him and how they've stood behind him," Hendrickson said. "He realizes he's been his own worst enemy. Really, I appreciate Aldon's approach to it."

The pass-rusher has had no shortage of legal issues during his time with the 49ers. Smith was suspended for nine games in 2014 after violating the league's personal conduct and substance abuse policy.
