Trade deadline: 3 potential landing spots for Jaromir Jagr

Bruce Fedyck / USA TODAY Sports

As the March 2 trade deadline approaches, Jaromir Jagr appears set to join his fifth team in four seasons since rejoining the NHL in 2011.

Heading into Thursday's action, the New Jersey Devils are 12 points out of a playoff spot and have a 0.258 percent chance of making up that difference, according to hockeystats.ca.

Jagr is believed to be ready and willing to be dealt to an Eastern Conference contender, but hasn't yet because of, well, this laughable notion:

Nevertheless, here are three potential landing spots for the 43-year-old.

Pittsburgh Penguins

A dream scenario for hockey fans would be Jagr finishing his career where it all began, as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Jagr's most successful years were spent with the Penguins, with whom he won two Stanley Cups, five Art Ross Trophies and a Hart Trophy.

The Penguins are already fairly deep at forward (despite a serious injury suffered by Pascal Dupuis), but a top six of Jagr, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz, David Perron, Patric Hornqvist could be absolutely lethal come playoff time, while allowing the rest of the field to round out the bottom six.

Jagr has intimated that he wants to keep playing into next season, but going out on top with the Penguins would be a picture perfect finish to a legendary career.

Washington Capitals

The next candidate for a potential landing spot for Jagr is the Washington Capitals, a team that appears to be finally putting together a bona fide contender under head coach Barry Trotz.

The club's first line is currently built around star forwards Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, with rookie Andre Burakovsky locking down the right wing. Burakovsky has recorded nine goals and 12 assists in 43 games, while also finding himself down in the AHL and up in the press box at times.

Here, then, is a perfect opportunity for an upgrade, allowing Jagr to finally make good on the massive deal he signed with the Capitals back in 2001.

Boston Bruins

Call it deja vu, but the Boston Bruins – desperate to qualify for the playoffs and succeed therein – could once again call upon Jagr to help their offensive attack.

The Bruins sent a first-round pick to the Dallas Stars to acquire Jagr in 2013, and while the early returns were promising – two goals and seven assists in 11 regular-season games – he was unable to find the back of the net in 22 playoff contests. The run ended with a loss in Game 6 of the Cup Final.

Boston has a glaring hole to the right of David Krejci and Milan Lucic, and an expiring contract like Jagr's would be an ideal fit in an attempt to salvage the season.

Jagr clearly remains a useful player, recording 35 goals and 61 assists in 135 games with the Devils dating back to the beginning of last season, and could be part of the remedy in regards to whatever is ailing the Bruins this season.
