Brian Hoyer considering all factors in deciding on future with Browns

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer was pulled from the starting lineup in December after throwing zero touchdowns against seven interceptions in his final three starts.

The 29-year-old was replaced by rookie Johnny Manziel, who struggled miserably in two starts as Cleveland stumbled out of playoff contention and lost its final five games. Cleveland's offense went limp during its final three games, scoring a mere 23 points over that span.

Hoyer spoke to the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot Saturday about a myriad of issues involving the club, including the departure of offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Hired by the Atlanta Falcons this offseason, Shanahan appeared discontent in his lone season with the Browns, a fact that certainly wasn't lost on Hoyer.

"To say I was unaware, I'd be lying," he said about Shanahan's unhappiness.

Hoyer said that all options are on the table regarding his future, but that the nature of Shanahan's departure and the NFL's recent investigation into the Browns for unauthorized sideline texting could play a role in his decision.

"It obviously will, I think. I'm going to make the best decision possible. To read the stories and see what's going on, I'm just as interested as you guys are to see where that comes out, especially because when you read it, it has to deal with the quarterback situation and playcalling. That's something that could affect how I feel about it."

Hoyer also responded to Josh Gordon's recent suspension.

"It's disappointing it's gotten to this point. Hopefully he can figure it out," Hoyer said.

Gordon was banned from using alcohol after being arrested for DWI last July, and was suspended for at least a year on Feb. 3 after violating terms of the league's substance abuse policy.

The enigmatic wide receiver still showed flashes of brilliance, catching 24 passes for 303 yards in five games. However, it appears he no longer has a future with the Browns after multiple infractions.

This summer will be critical for the Browns in deciding the future of their quarterback position, among other things, and Hoyer's comments ought to give management plenty to consider entering the offseason.
