NAC licensed Diaz only 3 days before UFC 183; had double the allowed marijuana limit in system

Not only did Nick Diaz fail his post-fight drug test following UFC 183 after his drug sample contained marijuana metabolites, but he wasn't even licensed by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) until a few days before the fight.

According to NAC executive director Bob Bennett, Diaz didn't submit clean drug documentation in order to be re-licensed by the state until Jan. 28, just three days before UFC 183.

"It's not an anomaly," Bennett told MMAFighting.com's Marc Raimondi. "We do get them at the last second. We'd prefer not to, because it creates problems. But don't think we didn't contact the promoters. We did contact the promoters. We said, 'We need a clean bill of health from Nick or he isn't fighting.'"

Bennett indicated that Diaz's failed drug test contained 300 ng/ml, which is double the allowed threshold for marijuana metabolites.

Diaz's manager, Cesar Gracie, was confused with how his fighter could have passed a pre-fight test, yet immediately fail his post-fight test.

"My understanding was he passed the test, then he fought and then after he passed the test, he did not smoke," Gracie said. "What we think happened is the exertion of the fight affected the test and that's why he tested positive."

Bennett, though, says the explanation is obvious.

"It's obvious once he provided us a negative one he started smoking again," Bennett said.
