The Green Bay Packers fired special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum on Friday.

Slocum held the role since 2009 and had been part of the Packers' organization since 2006.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy commented on Slocum's release in a statement.

"I would like to thank Shawn for all of his contributions over the past nine years. He was a positive contributor to our success, including helping us win Super Bowl XLV," he said.

Green Bay's special teams units struggled all year, and a botched onside kick recovery helped the Seattle Seahawks come back from a 12-point deficit during the NFC Championship game.
