3 biggest shocks in Super Bowl history

Reuters

The Super Bowl is among the most-watched sporting events in the world year after year, and since its inception, it has produced countless unforgettable moments, both on and off the field.

Here are three of the most shocking moments in Super Bowl history:

Super Bowl XLVII - Power Outage

Super Bowl XLVII was supposed to be remembered as a battle between brother head coaches Jim and John Harbaugh, but it'll go down in history for a different reason.

With the Baltimore Ravens leading the San Francisco 49ers 28-6 early in the third quarter, the Superdome in New Orleans suddenly went dark.

The 34-minute delay seemed to throw off the Ravens and spark the 49ers. San Francisco scored the next 17 points to make it 28-23, but Baltimore eventually prevailed 34-31.

There have been several theories about what went wrong, with Terrell Suggs going so far as to accuse Roger Goodell of orchestrating an elaborate conspiracy to rob the Ravens of a title.

My personal belief is that Jim Harbaugh did some rewiring at halftime to derail Baltimore's momentum. We all know how competitive he is, and when you throw sibling rivalry into the mix, there's no telling how low Harbaugh might stoop.

Would you put it past him?

Super Bowl XXXVIII - Janet Jackson reveals too much

The NFL and CBS got more than they bargained for during Janet Jackson's halftime show in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Jackson was joined on stage by Justin Timberlake, and during the closing moments of his song "Rock Your Body," he ripped off a piece of Jackson's outfit, exposing her breast.

Won't somebody please think of the children?

Jackson's antics sparked outrage. The FCC fined CBS $550,000 (which was later thrown out), and a five-second delay was implemented for future performances.

Somehow, against all odds, society pulled together and life went on.

Super Bowl XLII - David Tyree's circus catch

It was going to take something spectacular to beat the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, and that's exactly what David Tyree provided.

The unheralded New York Giants receiver made arguably the greatest catch ever to spark one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.

There are so many things that boggle the mind about this catch.

Eli Manning was fortunate to get the throw away after being swarmed by Patriots pass rushers. The play could have easily been whistled dead if Manning was in the grasp of a defender for just a moments longer.

The pass itself was ill-advised. It's right down the middle of the field with four Patriots in the vicinity of Tyree - a classic Eli throw that ends in disaster 95 percent of the time.

Then, against every fundamental receiving rule in the book, Tyree pins the ball against his head and maintains control with Rodney Harrison trying to rip it away.

Just like they drew it up.

That grab set up a Plaxico Burress's game-winning touchdown, destroying the Patriots' perfect season.
