Cardinals' Jay cleared for workouts following wrist surgery

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jon Jay has been given approval to begin working out following wrist surgery.

"It's too early to tell when I'll be 100 percent, but it's a good thing there are seven weeks until spring," Jay told Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "That extra 10 days (before spring workouts start this year) is huge. I've already been working. I feel good. I have the time I need. I expect to be ready."

Jay said he dealt with soreness for the last two years but it really became an issue over the final three months of the season. The 29-year-old underwent a procedure to have the ligament repaired in October and hopes to swing a bat within the next couple of weeks.

"Everything looks good," Jay said. "Getting back to full strength is the next step. I don't anticipate anything that would slow me down. I'm optimistic."
