Portland Timbers owner admits move for Didier Drogba is unlikely, despite coach's interest

It seems Didier Drogba is set for the Stamford Bridge exit door once again at the conclusion of the current season, leading to speculation about the Ivorian's next destination.

Drogba moved to China following his first departure from Chelsea in 2012 and transferred to Turkey to play with Galatasaray shortly after.

Could he be on the move in the opposite direction this time around and follow in the footsteps of Liverpool's Steven Gerrard?

Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson had some glowing comments about Drogba and the striker's capabilities in Major League Soccer, but came short of confirming the club's interest in the 36-year-old.

“Drogba is a unique guy who, despite his age, is uniquely skilled to clean up in MLS," Paulson said, courtesy of The London Evening Standard.

Timbers head coach Caleb Porter, however, probably wouldn't be afraid to hide his interest in a move for the Chelsea striker, no matter how far-fetched the possibility seems at the present time.

"The League almost signed him a couple years ago and I know my coach would love him to be a Timber, but I highly doubt it at this point,” Paulson said.

Portland would also have to make important decisions regarding its roster since all three designated player spots are occupied. They would have to depart with one player if they're going to dish out a salary comparable to the millions Gerrard will make in his new deal with the L.A. Galaxy.
