Ohio State shocks Alabama in Sugar Bowl

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Ezekiel Elliott broke an 85-yard touchdown with 3:24 left, which turned out to be the game-winning score, as Ohio State beat Alabama 42-35 in the Sugar Bowl to advance to the National Championship game.

The Buckeyes will meet Oregon on Jan. 12 in Arlington, Texas to determine the first champion in the inaugural College Football Playoff.

The No. 4 Buckeyes came into the game showing no signs of intimidation against the No. 1 Crimson Tide.

Elliott finished the game with 230 yards with two touchdowns on 20 carries. He was all the support that quarterback Cardale Jones needed, as the pivot was making just his second collegiate start.

Jones had 243 passing yards on 18-of-35 with a touchdown and interception. He seemed to be most comfortable with the ball tucked, finishing with 43 yards on 17 carries.

Crimson Tide quarterback Blake Sims had his team in position to tie the game on the final play, but he threw his third interception of the night.

Sims, a senior, finished his final college game with 237 passing yards with two touchdowns and the trio of picks.

Amari Cooper, the Crimson Tide's star receiver, finished the game with nine catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

Buckeyes wide receiver Devin Smith finished the game with two catches for 87 yards and a touchdown.
