Kings deny having tried 4-on-5 strategy, call it a mistake

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

When Reggie Evans sat on the bench in the middle of a defensive play on Monday, it was his own doing.

It was not a tactic by head coach Tyrone Corbin, or a move made at the behest of owner Vivek Ranadive. It was just a player mistakenly sitting down in the middle of a play. Because that happens all the time.

And that's the story the Sacramento Kings are going with.

The team denied trying to run a 4-on-5 defense with a cherry picker in the game - a strategy Ranadive apparently pitched to the coaching staff in the offseason, and one that could be employed in some form this season. The team said Evans thought DeMarcus Cousins had checked in for him, later realizing his error and entering play.

Whatever happened, it very nearly worked, as Evans finished the ensuing offensive position with an easy dunk attempt, only to miss it.
