Report: Jay Cutler 'fuming' over issues between Bears' players, coaches

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer appeared to put their issues behind them Friday after reports emerged that the team was experiencing "buyer's remorse" over Cutler's contract extension. However, according to CBS Sports's Jason La Canfora, Cutler is still "fuming" over the incident.

Citing several unnamed sources, La Canfora reports that head coach Marc Trestman's laid-back style of allowing players to govern their own locker room has backfired, creating some mistrust between the players and coaching staff.

The Cutler-Kromer fiasco wasn't the first blowup between a Bears player and coach, either. Earlier this season, wide receiver Brandon Marshall and assistant defensive backs coach Chris Harris were involved in a heated altercation after Marshall showed up to a shells-only practice without shells and neither Trestman nor general manager Phil Emery intervened, La Canfora reports.

The altercation continued during another portion of practice and was only addressed briefly during the next team meeting, according to La Canfora.

Sources told La Canfora that Trestman often addresses his team at full-squad meetings from the back of the room instead of the front and there have been "fiery exchanges" between players in the locker room.

As for Kromer, La Canfora reports that there are clauses included in the contracts of Bears coaches for dealing with the media that could give the team the ability to dismiss staff "for cause." However, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Trestman decided against firing Kromer.

"One reason which is Kromer is a very valued assistant on that staff," Rapoport said Sunday on "NFL GameDay Morning." "In fact, I'm told by another Bears source, a different Bears source, that when they hired Trestman, hiring Kromer as offensive coordinator was considered as important as everything."

Rapoport also reports that Cutler was hurt by Kromer's remarks.

"Talking to people close to Jay Cutler, he was definitely hurt by this," Rapoport said. "A little stung and certainly surprised that Aaron Kromer would do something like this.

"But listen to Jay Cutler's press conference. He seemed extremely professional, much more professional than we've seen him in the public light in some years, mainly because he knows, thanks in part to this report, and because of the way he played, the spotlight is on him like it has never been before, and he knows of all things, he needs to play better.

"The thing that could come out of this for Jay Cutler is he knows he might be done with the Bears this year. He knows so much rides in him. He is in control of his own destiny."
