Cam Newton suffers 2 lower back fractures in car crash; will remain in hospital overnight

Eric Hartline / USA TODAY Sports

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is in fair condition and will remain at Carolinas Medical Center overnight after his car was involved in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon.

Further testing revealed Newton has two transverse process fractures in his lower back and no additional internal injuries, the team announced. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered the same injury earlier this season and missed one game as a result.

The accident occurred near Bank of America Stadium at around 12:30 p.m. One witness told the Charlotte Observer that Newton's truck was travelling south on Church Street and the other vehicle was crossing the street at the time of the collision.

Both drivers were placed in neck braces and on backboards before being transported to the hospital.
