Report: Miller turned down 4-year, $40M offer from Astros

Joy R. Absalon / USA TODAY Sports

The thrifty Houston Astros tried to throw a ton of money at Andrew Miller - to no avail.

Miller agreed to a four-year, $36-million deal with the New York Yankees on Friday, but it may not have been the highest dollar figure on the table.

The Astros offered the left-hander a four-year, $40-million deal that Miller turned down, according to Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle

“The Astros were extremely aggressive and very, very positive,” Miller's agent Mark Rodgers said. “I can honestly say I think they did everything they possibly could to lure him there.”

Drellich notes that the Astros' aggressiveness caused the Yankees to increase their initial offer of $32 million because general manager Brian Cashman was informed of the $40-million offer.

Houston led the majors in blown saves over the last two seasons with 55, which explains its strong push with Miller.

David Robertson is now the best free-agent reliever available, and the Astros have already reportedly expressed interest in the former Yankee closer.
