Nebraska fires head coach Bo Pelini
Nebraska has dismissed head coach Bo Pelini, the school announced Sunday.
The news comes after the Cornhuskers wrapped up their regular season with a 37-34 victory over Iowa this past Friday. Finishing with a respectable 9-3 record, Nebraska dropped two of its last three games of the season against Big Ten rivals Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Pelini became Nebraska's full-time head coach in 2008 and compiled a 67-27 record over six years with the team. He was also the team's interim head coach in 2003 when he took over for Frank Solich after serving as a defensive coordinator.
"Earlier this morning, I informed coach Bo Pelini of our decision to move forward in a new direction," athletic director Shawn Eichorst said in a statement released Sunday, as reported by ESPN's Mitch Sherman.
"Coach Pelini served our University admirably for seven years and led our football program's transition to the Big Ten Conference. We wish Coach Pelini and his wonderful family all the best and thank him for his dedicated service to the University."
"I am confident that Shawn will find the best coach, teacher and fit for this University and for our football program," said Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman.
Huskers players were informed of the firing in an email from Eichorst on Sunday morning.
