Report: Lakers will pursue Rajon Rondo in free agency

When marquee franchises have cap space with marquee free agents on the market, the two are going to be linked. The Los Angeles Lakers and Rajon Rondo are no different.

With the Celtics point guard set for unrestricted free agency in July and the Lakers having less than $40 million in guaranteed salary on their books for next season, Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix reports that "several rival executives believe the Lakers will make a strong run at Rondo next summer."

Just like reports that the New York Knicks will pursue Marc Gasol in free agency, reports linking Rondo to the Lakers aren't surprising. Most teams with cap space will be interested in free agents of Rondo's caliber.

Rondo is averaging 9.3 points, 12.5 assists, nine rebounds and 1.5 steals through four games for the Celtics this season. The 28-year-old, who will earn nearly $13 million in the last year of his current deal, has been the subject of rampant trade rumors as a pending free agent.
