The NHL will announce its vastly popular documentary series leading up to the NHL's Winter Classic will be produced and aired on premium cable provider Epix this upcoming season, sources have told ESPN's Scott Burnside.

Four segments will be aired in the weeks before the Jan. 1 game between the Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks takes place at Nationals Park in Washington.

The league will make an official announcement Sept. 23.

Burnside also reports, in addition to the Winter Classic documentary, the network will produce and air another series during the build-up to the Feb. 21 Stadium Series game between the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings at Levi’s Field in San Francisco.

Sportsnet, the Canadian national broadcast partner of the NHL, will air the series and share the production costs of the documentaries, which will feature many of the aspects that made HBO's 24/7 Road To The Winter Classic so popular during their three seasons of production.
