UNC police report about possible assault was innacurate

USA TODAY Sports

Eighteen days before news broke that a Tar Heels football player may have suffered a concussion stemming from a hazing incident, school police had been notified about a possible aggravated assault involving athletes just off campus.

The assault allegations didn't become public until Aug. 26, when Yahoo! Sports reported that Jackson Boyer, a walk-on receiver, had suffered a concussion from what the reporters described as hazing by teammates at a hotel the team was staying at during training camp.

The News & Observer indicates that the first report filed by UNC police only shows an "allegation of aggravated assault." It fails to identify the victim, the people involved or even who contacted police about the incident. The report simply notes the police station as the location of the incident and that it happened on Aug. 8, four days after the incident.

UNC-Chapel Hill Police Chief Jeff McCracken now acknowledges the report was inaccurate, but he said any reports of an effort being made to hide the incident is false.

“If there was some effort to cover this up, a report never would have been filed," McCracken said.
