Diamondbacks manager: Goldschmidt likely out for the year

Matt Kartozian / USA Today Sports

Kirk Gibson did some quick math and came to the conclusion Arizona Diamondbacks fans feared most: Paul Goldschmidt is likely out for the season.

Goldschmidt was placed on the 15-day disabled list after fracturing his left hand on an Ernesto Frieri fastball Friday, but recovery time for that type of injury lasts much longer than two weeks.

The sobering realization puts the brakes on another MVP-caliber season by the Diamondbacks first baseman after finishing second to Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen last year.

Goldschmidt, hitting .300/.396/.542 with 19 homers and an elite .402 weighted on-base percentage, is among the league leaders in nearly every offensive category (as noted in the story below).

But with his club well beyond reach of a playoff spot and an estimated eight weeks of recovery ahead of him, the 26-year-old slugger appears to have played his final game of the 2014 season.
