Devils sign Andy Greene to 5-year, $25-million contract extension

The New Jersey Devils have signed defenseman Andy Greene to a long-term contract extension, general manager Lou Lamoriello announced Tuesday.

Five years, $25 million total is Andy Greene's extension. It's $5 million per season straight across.

"Everything came together pretty quickly," Greene, 31, added per Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger. "Both sides are extremely excited."
The veteran blue-liner led all Devils skaters in ice-time last season, logging major minutes in all situations. Greene also led the Devils' defense in shot-attempt differential and among first-pairing defenders was behind only Duncan Keith, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Drew Doughty, Duncan Keith, Zdeno Chara, and Erik Karlsson in relative shot-attempt differential.
In addition to playing a key defensive role for a stingy Devils club, Greene pitched in eight goals and 32 points. While it's difficult to evaluate a long-term deal without contract details, Greene is clearly a bona fide top-pairing defender who excels in all three zones.
