Andrew Bynum had previously expressed an interest in returning to the Los Angeles Lakers for the coming season, but the possibility exists that Bynum will write off the 2014-15 season entirely.

Bynum's agent, David Lee, spoke with the New York Post on Friday and suggested Bynum could sit out the year to undergo a complex procedure that would hopefully restore the health of his knees.

From the Post:

He is seriously contemplating sitting out 2014-15 to undergo the Germany-based knee therapy called “The Regenokine Program’’ that would require an extra long rehab, according to his agent David Lee. But he could be in play for the following season.

Regenokine is a non-surgical program that promotes new cartilage growth through a series of injections. The FDA still hasn’t approved it in the United States. Bynum is considering doing the program with well-known doctor German doctor Peter Wehling, who worked with Kobe Bryant and Alex Rodriguez. It is similar but not identical to the PRP procedure.

While it may sound risky to undergo an unapproved procedure (that doesn't mean it's illegal, mind you), the alternative may be hanging 'em up altogether.

Bynum managed to appear in 26 games this season, split between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers, but didn't look at all like his former self. He missed the entire 2012-13 season, and in the five seasons before that he had missed an average of 26 games a season.

If Bynum does make it back, his agent expects the New York Knicks to represent a potential landing spot, as Bynum was at his very best with Phil Jackson on the Los Angeles Lakers.

"If he's healthy, Phil will be interested," Lee said.

While it may seem a long-shot now, Bynum is still just 26 years old. The knee procedure may represent a payoff-appropriate risk, and the Knicks a nice value-restoring landing spot afterward.
