Chiefs' Alex Smith on extension talks: 'I love Kansas City, I love the coaching staff, the players'

Alex Smith hopes the Kansas City Chiefs see him as their quarterback of the future and also hopes to get paid in doing so.

The 30-year-old is reportedly looking for a deal exceeding what the Chicago Bears gave Jay Cutler - $126 million over seven years - and expressed his desire to stay with the organization that acquired his services in February of 2013.

“I’d love to have it done,” Smith told Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star. “I love Kansas City, I love the coaching staff, the players. … But when you’re talking about this many years and that type of deal, you want it done right. You want both sides happy, and you want it to be something that is going to last and you can play out. A lot of things go into it.

“With that, there’s still plenty of time. I still have a whole year left. And who knows what will happen?”

Smith said that the two sides have had limited talks to date regarding an extension, but he is expecting the conversation to pick up when camp begins.

“This time of year, the whole NFL is put on hold because this is the little time coaches and general managers have off, just like the rest of us.

“We’ve continued talks, had open conversation, but no news to report.”

Smith enjoyed a successful first season with the Chiefs, completing 308-of-508 passes (60.6%) for a career-high 3,313 yards and 23 touchdowns.
