Flames' O'Brien placed on unconditional waivers for purpose of buyout

The Calgary Flames have placed depth defenseman Shane O'Brien on unconditional waivers for the purpose of exercising a compliance buyout on the final year of his contract, according to Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

O'Brien was due $2.2 million in salary in the final year of his deal, so the buyout will cost the Flames $1.466 million spread over two years per capgeek.com.

The 30-year-old O'Brien appeared in 45 games with the Flames last season, managing three assists while logging just a hair over 11 minutes per game on average at even-strength.

This is the final buyout period during which compliance buyouts can be exercised during the current CBA. The deadline to inform a player's representative about the intention to terminate their contract falls at 5 p.m. ET on Monday.
