Scouting Report: Nik Stauskas, G, Michigan

Jeff Hanisch / USA Today Sports

Doubt Nik Stauskas as an NBA player at your own peril - he wasn't a top-tier college recruit, and few suspected he'd grow into his expanded role as a sophomore this past year for Michigan, but he's continued to evolve. The next task facing him seems to be whether he can handle the point at the next level, or whether he'll be relegated to "just a shooter," which is hardly a criticism when you're perhaps the best shooter in the entire draft.

Scouting Report

Strengths: Where are you standing right now? Where's the nearest basketball net? Stauskas could hit that shot. Yes, Stauskas has anywhere-in-the-gym range, but it's not the only tool in his arsenal, as the Canadian showed an affinity for getting to the hoop and the charity stripe, where he's automatic. His handle is good enough for spot duty at the point but his length and athleticism don't necessarily make him a liability at the two.

Weaknesses: Stauskas isn't all that strong and his athleticism doesn't translate to much lateral quickness, so it seems likely that he'll be a negative on the defensive end. Despite the strong handle and jump in assist numbers this year, there is some doubt as to whether he can create for others in a point guard role.

Highlight Reel

What to Expect on Draft Day

It didn't seem like Stauskas had much of a chance at the top 10, but he's worked out for teams picking as high as sixth. Maybe it's due diligence, but it's possible his stock is higher than it first appeared, and anyone who watched Michigan consistently would understand the intrigue, if not the upside. Teams always need shooting, which is why Stauskas probably doesn't slide any further than No. 16, and he has a real shot at landing in the lottery.
