Bruins' Thornton agrees with fine, apologizes for squirting water at Canadiens' Subban
Despite receiving the maximum fine for unsportsmanlike conduct after squirting water at Canadiens blueliner P.K. Subban, the penalty is merely a drop in the bucket in what's been a rather expensive season for Shawn Thornton.
The Bruins' enforcer has now forfeited nearly $87,000 worth of his $1.1 million salary in 2014, but opening his wallet for another couple grand appears far easier to stomach, especially as the Bruins continue to inflate what's becoming a lucrative playoff bonus pool.
Less than 24 hours after "Watergate," Thornton surfaced to apologize for the incident and stated that he agreed with the NHL's decision to sanction.
"I obviously agree with what the league does there. I'll pay the fine and move on. I'm sorry that the silly incident kind of overshadowed how my teammates played, and the great win, and how good this series has been," Thornton said, via Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com.
"I got caught up in the moment, and I probably shouldn't have done that. I'll move on and get ready for Game 6."
Seemingly unanimous in the Bruins' dressing room, head coach Claude Julien said that Thornton had to "own up" to his squirt.
"As a coach you always want to support your players, but there are certain things that you can’t support."
Thornton will attempt to make a contribution on the ice Monday when the Bruins attempt to close out the series and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
