Jerry Jones downplays talk of Manziel to the Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sure likes talking about Johnny Manziel. He's not hiding the fact he's a fan of the former Heisman Trophy winner, and that's leading many to believe that Dallas could be targeting Manziel in the draft.

However, Jones is pleased with Tony Romo as his quarterback and tells fans not to expect the Cowboys to look in Johnny Football's direction.

"I will go as far as to say it is not our primary goal in the first round to be looking at a quarterback," Jones said, via ESPN. "We've got a good one."

With Romo coming off back surgery, Kyle Orton contemplating retirement and Brandon Weeden only recently added into the mix, Dallas isn't exactly brimming with confidence at the quarterback position. Still, there are other needs the Cowboys must address in the early rounds that will keep them away from a QB.

"It is logical that your position of strength or viewed as a strength would certainly not qualify for the most need in the first or second or early rounds," Jones said. "It does not qualify for the biggest need."

That doesn't rule out Dallas from selecting a quarterback at all, but Jones indicated the team is more likely to trade down and acquire picks if some of the big name quarterbacks start to slip down the board.

"If you look when you draft relative to the qualifications the best player on the board, then that opens it up for a lot of dynamics going on there," Jones said. "As far as quality quarterbacks, we're stacking them up if we draft [one] in my mind."
