Jose Abreu named AL Player, Rookie of the Month

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu capped an historic first month in the majors Monday when he was named American League Player and Rookie of the Month.

Abreu, who hit .261/.331/.943 with 10 homers and 31 RBI in April, joins Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig as the only players to win Player of the Month in their inaugural month in the majors. He is also just the eighth player in history to win both awards in the same calendar month.

The 27-year-old set rookie records for his April totals in homers, RBI, totals bases and extra-base hits. Abreu is the first White Sox player to win Player of the Month since Magglio Ordonez in 2003.
