According to multiple reports, the Los Angeles Clippers were able to trim their luxury tax bill significantly on Thursday but were unable to get out of the tax entirely.

After dealing Antawn Jamison to the Atlanta Hawks, the Clippers then dealt big man Byron Mullens to the Philadelphia 76ers along with a second-round pick for a second-round pick that is sure to be heavily-protected.

Basically, the 76ers are doing the Clippers the favor of taking on Mullens' $947,907 salary and $1.1 million player option for next season - a favor the Clippers are rewarding with a second-round pick. The 76ers care little for the additional salary, as they remain well below the salary floor.

In 27 games with the Clippers, Mullens averaged just 2.5 points in 6.2 minutes. It's possible he'll provide fantasy value in Philadelphia, as he's done well in bad situations before - he averaged 10.6 points and 6.4 rebounds last year for Charlotte, although he was woefully inefficient.

The Clippers, meanwhile, remain $162,000 over the luxury tax line. This would represent the first time ever the Clippers have paid the tax, though they at least trimmed the bill by roughly $1.7 million on Thursday.
