Blackhawks' Shaw signs two-year extension worth $4 million
Contract details for the two-year extension that Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw signed on Tuesday have now been reported by TSN's Bob McKenzie:
Shaw has contributed 11 points in 18 games this season while skating mostly in Chicago's top-six and logging major minutes on the power-play. In 103 NHL games over three seasons, Shaw has contributed 49 points and posted stellar underlying numbers.
Despite his excellent performance, Shaw was a pending restricted free-agent who would've been ineligible for arbitration. So he didn't have much in the way of leverage.
Chicago has essentially signed Shaw to a somewhat generous bridge contract that will see him paid as if he's a "seventh forward" over the next two seasons. It's a good bet that Shaw will provide Chicago with significant value over the lifetime of his shiny new, two-year contract extension.
The only real risk for the Blackhawks with this deal is that, should Shaw continue to produce offense at an above average second-line clip while providing 'physical play' value, the club may regret not locking him up for longer come the summer of 2016.
