Posey: Decision to go on concussion DL 'bigger than baseball'

After showing concussion-like symptoms in an evaluation Tuesday, a day after taking a fastball to his helmet, Buster Posey is glad the San Francisco Giants erred on the side of caution by placing him on the seven-day disabled list.

"I don't take it lightly when you're talking about your head," Posey said Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's John Shea. “It's bigger than baseball.

"It's the hardest part of the body to evaluate, somebody's head. So it's good to have some caution."

Posey was forced to leave Monday's contest after taking a 94-mph fastball from Arizona Diamondbacks starter Taijuan Walker to his head in the first inning.

Though his helmet seemed to bear the brunt of the impact, and manager Bruce Bochy said Posey was "doing fine" following the game, the 30-year-old backstop admitted that some nagging issues persuaded him and the club to temporarily sideline him until the symptoms subside.

"I don't anticipate it being a long time," Posey continued. "That's based on how I feel. Obviously, we've seen some guys having lingering effects. Again, overall, I feel pretty good."

Implemented in the 2011 season, the seven-day disabled list differs from the traditional 10-day and 60-day alternatives as it's meant to thoroughly assess a player with concussion symptoms before rushing them back into action.
